Most buffering advice is a list of unrelated suggestions. This is an order of operations, starting with the checks that resolve the majority of cases.
Buffering has a small number of causes and a predictable hierarchy. Working through them in order takes about ten minutes and resolves the overwhelming majority of cases without contacting anyone.
This single question splits the problem in half. If one channel stutters and the rest are fine, the source feed is the issue and nothing on your end will fix it. If everything stutters, the problem is between your router and your player.
Open the same channel on a laptop using VLC, following the Windows and Mac guide. If the laptop plays cleanly on the same network, your TV or streaming stick is the bottleneck, not the connection.
This is the highest-yield fix in the entire list and the one most often skipped. Wi-Fi congestion in the evening is the single most common cause of buffering during live sport. An Ethernet adapter for a Firestick costs about the same as a month of service.
Every serious player has this setting and it is not always on by default. In TiviMate it is Settings β Playback β Decoder β Hardware. On older boxes this alone fixes stutter on 4K feeds.
Unplug it for a full thirty seconds rather than pressing a reset button. This clears the connection table, which matters more on ISP-supplied hardware that has been running for months.
On Android and Fire OS, an app that has been running for weeks accumulates a cache large enough to affect playback. Clear it from the system app settings rather than inside the player.
Two things get recommended constantly and rarely change anything. Reinstalling the player fixes almost nothing that clearing the cache does not fix faster. And a VPN usually makes buffering worse, not better, because it adds a hop and caps throughput. Use one for privacy if you want, but not as a performance fix.
