What is IPTV? How it actually works, in plain terms

Most explanations stop at 'television over the internet', which tells you nothing useful. This one goes as deep as you need to make a buying decision and no deeper.
IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television. That expansion is technically correct and practically useless, because it describes an on-demand film service, a video-sharing site and a hospital's in-room channel system equally well. What people usually mean by the term is narrower: a subscription that delivers live television channels over an ordinary internet connection, without a satellite dish, a cable line, or an aerial.
This piece covers how that delivery works, what it demands from your connection, which parts of the market are licensed and which are not, and how to tell a competent provider from an incompetent one. If you only want to get something playing tonight, the setup guides are the faster route.
The part that makes IPTV different from streaming apps
On-demand streaming and IPTV both send video over the internet, but they solve opposite problems. An on-demand service serves a file that already exists in full. Your player can request any part of it, buffer thirty seconds ahead, and re-request anything that arrives corrupted. Time is on its side.
A live channel has none of those luxuries. The content is being produced as you watch it, so there is nothing ahead to buffer. A packet that arrives late is worthless, because the moment it described has already passed. This is why a connection that streams 4K film without complaint can still stutter on a live football match: the film is tolerant of variance and the match is not.
Almost every practical difference follows from that one constraint. Live feeds need consistent throughput rather than high peak throughput. Buffer settings matter more. Evening congestion hurts more. And a provider's quality is judged on how stable their feeds are at kickoff, not on how many channels they claim.
Three things sold under one name
A subscription usually bundles three distinct services, and they fail independently of each other. Knowing which one is broken saves a great deal of time.

Catch-up is the component buyers most often overlook and most often miss once they have it. A channel list without catch-up is a channel list. A channel list with four days behind it behaves like television.
The protocols you will actually encounter
You do not need to understand these to watch anything, but the names appear in player settings and support threads, and knowing what they are removes most of the mystery.
MPEG-TS
A continuous stream, descended from broadcast television. It starts fast and has low latency, which is why it is preferred for live sport. It is also unforgiving: there is no clean mechanism for recovering a lost segment, so a network hiccup shows up immediately as a visible glitch.
HLS
HTTP Live Streaming chops the feed into short segments, typically two to ten seconds, and hands your player a rolling index of them. Because each segment is an ordinary HTTP download, HLS survives poor networks far better and can switch quality mid-stream. The cost is latency: you are usually fifteen to forty seconds behind the live edge, which is why your neighbour's television celebrates a goal before yours does.
M3U and M3U8
These are not video formats at all. An M3U file is a plain text list of stream addresses with some metadata attached, and it is the thing most providers hand you as a 'playlist'. What it demands from your connection
IPTV is far less bandwidth-hungry than most people expect. Stability matters considerably more than headline speed. A rock-solid 40 Mbps line outperforms a 500 Mbps line that dips every few minutes.

The right-hand column is deliberately generous because a household does other things at the same time. Note also that upload speed is irrelevant here, and latency to your provider matters more than either figure. If a feed stutters, the buffering diagnostic works through causes in the order that resolves most cases fastest.
The three markets, and why the distinction matters
'IPTV' covers three quite different kinds of business, and conflating them is how buyers end up confused about legality.
1Telco IPTV. Your phone company delivers television over its own managed network, sold as a bundle with the line. Fully licensed, generally reliable, priced like cable because it competes with cable.
2Licensed streaming bundles. The live-TV packages and standalone sports services sold in your own market. They hold distribution rights and stream over the public internet. Legal, and priced somewhere between Β£30 and Β£90 a month.
3The reseller market. Thousands of services buying wholesale access to feeds and repackaging them. This is where the Β£5-a-month offers live, and where the honest answer about rights is complicated.

How to judge a provider before paying
The industry's marketing is close to worthless, because every claim in it is unverifiable and most are invented. Here is what can actually be checked.
Ask when the channel count was taken
A lineup decays constantly. Feeds go dark, regional variants pile up, dead entries never get cleared. A number without a date is a number from an unknown day. Almost nobody in this industry publishes one, which makes it a fast filter: ask, and see what comes back.
Use the trial during something live
A trial at eleven on a Tuesday morning tells you nothing. Networks are quiet and every provider looks excellent. Test at kickoff on a Saturday, on the television you actually watch, over the connection you actually have. That is the only test that predicts anything.
Check the specific things you care about
Your league, at the time it is broadcast in your country, not a generic sports category.
Catch-up depth, and whether it works on the channels you would use it on.
The audio track and subtitle language you need, which is where multi-language catalogues quietly fall short.
Simultaneous connections, if more than one person watches at once.
Treat stored payment details as a warning sign
A service that keeps a card on file can renew you silently, and in this corner of the market the cancellation process is often deliberately awkward. A provider that stores nothing cannot bill you by accident.

You need a special box
Almost any device from the last five years works. A Firestick, an existing smart TV, or a phone will all do it.
4K needs gigabit internet
A single 4K stream needs about 25 Mbps. Consistency matters far more than the number.
