Why your local team is blacked out, and what actually helps

Β· 6 min read Β· Updated August 31, 2026

The most common complaint in American sports streaming has almost nothing to do with the service you pay for. Understanding why makes it easier to solve.

Nothing generates more frustration than paying for a sports package and finding your nearest team unavailable. It feels like a fault in the service. It almost never is.

Where the rule comes from

American leagues sell rights twice: nationally to a network, and regionally to a sports network that covers a defined territory. To protect the value of the regional deal, the national package is blocked inside that territory. The result is a rule that reads as backwards to almost everyone who encounters it: the closer you live to the stadium, the fewer ways you have to watch.

The team you are most likely to support is the team you are least likely to be able to stream.

How each league differs

LeagueBlackout behaviour
Pro baseballThe strictest. In-market games are blocked on the league's own out-of-market product, which is exactly the product most fans buy to watch them.
Pro basketballSimilar in-market rule, complicated further by regional channels changing owners twice in recent years.
Pro ice hockeyNational games are widely available; regional coverage depends on which regional channel holds your team.
Pro footballLess about local blackouts now and more about which of four broadcasters holds a given Sunday window.

What genuinely helps

  1. Carry more feeds of the same event. A game blacked out on a national feed is frequently available on an international broadcaster covering the same fixture with different commentary.
  2. Check the away broadcast. Blackouts are territorial, so the visiting team's regional feed is often unrestricted where you are.
  3. Use a guide that shows every feed at once, rather than one that surfaces the single 'official' option.

Setting up for live sport specifically

Two settings matter more than anything else. Use a wired connection if the TV is near the router, because live sport is the least forgiving content for Wi-Fi congestion. And turn on hardware decoding in your player, which is covered per device in our setup guides.

Related questions

Can any IPTV service remove in-market baseball blackouts?
No. Blackouts are contractual terms in league rights deals. A service with more international feeds gives you more alternative broadcasts of the same game, but the underlying restriction stays.
Why is the away team's feed sometimes available?
Blackout territories are defined around the home market. A visiting team's regional broadcast is generally unrestricted outside its own territory.
